John Portman is internationally recognized as a world class architect, real estate developer, prolific entrepreneur, avid art fan and of course, artist. His personal commitment and clear sightedness has placed him as a modern day pioneer in the integration of art into architecture, even investing his own money into client projects in order to fulfill his vision. Or as Oliver Strebelle, University of Georgia Lamar Dodd Professor of Art and recognized sculptor puts it "No architect is more aware of the need of this mystery called art in our everyday life".
e-Types approached the book from the same principles that Mr. Portman approaches his architecture. Focusing on the line and the curve, the space in between and the subsequent tension between shadow and light, the massive and the ephemeral, the book zooms in and out of the forms in Mr. Portman's impressive body of work. Details of a door handle make room for a panoramic of a completed building which again gives way to a close-up of one of Mr. Portman's own art works - an attempt to do justice to the mans prolific and extensive work and attention to detail.
The book is published by Philip Yann Press and published to coincide with a large retrospective exhibition of Mr. Portman’s work at The High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.
