Roots and Wings

Being from somewhere and wanting to go places are two central traits of the Faroese identity. If you operate in s small national market with a strong culture, a breathtaking nature and a society where everybody knows everybody, you better be authentic and true to who you are. And in a World that is evermore interconnected you cannot operate in the financial market without a strong international outlook.

This was one of the main insights that e-Types and Eik arrived at when developing the new brand identity and visual universe for the former 'Føroya Sparikassi', the largest bank in the Faroe Islands with a 175 year history, when it took the leap from an identity as a locally based savings and loans institution to a full-fledged bank with the name Eik.

"The change feels like a natural step for us to take", comments Marner Jacobsen, CEO. "Our new name is more suitable and reflects our current activities to a larger extent than the old name. In reality it is an update of our name and profile to match our current activities and we hope it will make it easier for us to operate and communicate in the international markets", says Marner Jacobsen.

From Savings Bank to Full Service Bank
The e-Types design team needed to communicate the leap from small local savings bank to a modern and international full service bank, complete with a subsidiary branch in Copenhagen and a full array of international activities.
The new visual identity captures the bank's Faroese roots while conveying the international ambition and complexity of the firm. The programme is developed through extensive brand work in Copenhagen and The Faroe Islands.

"Through the whole branding and design process, through to the implementation workshops with the employees and the launch of the new name and design, working with Eik Bank has been an exciting and motivating experience.", says Camilla Frederiksen, e-Types.

The History of The Oak
Eik is the Faroese, Norwegian and Icelandic name for oak tree. "The oak tree is the bank's original logo and a part of the bank's longstanding tradition. It is also interpreted as symbolizing the bank's deep roots in Faroese society and as a symbol of stability and trustworthiness. Traits we wanted to incorporate into the design while updating the symbolism. In this way, the typography is inspired by the tree's leaves rather than its trunk etc." says Jonas Hecksher, e-Types.

The new identity was launched at a press conference in Thorshavn on the 19th December 2006 after the signage on all Eik branches had been changed overnight in no small feat of a logistical operation. The launch coincided with the bank's 175th anniversary.

Eik in Denmark
Eik has a presence in Denmark as well as in the Faroe Islands. Already at the time of the name change in the Faroe Islands, the Danish department was called Eik bank. At that time the Danish branch was primarily a private banking and investment bank. But after the acquisition of SkandiaBanken in 2007, Eik Bank in Denmark became a full-service bank with a primary focus on providing low-cost no-fuss service for private customers online and over the telephone on the daily dealings with the bank while at the same time offering a high-end investment and private banking expertise at those time during a lifespan where big financial decisions are made.
