Pop & Punk

The experimental and award-winning theatre company Kaleidoskop in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, acquired an additional stage in the old Kanonhallen in the eastern part of Copenhagen. The extension meant that Kaleidoskop changed from being an underground theatre to becoming one of the weightier cultural institutions on the Copenhagen theatre scene.

Kaleidoskop chose the names K1 and K2 to identify the two stages, and plays have been set up on both stages in collaboration with other smaller theatre companies in Denmark.

The task for e-Types was to create a visual identity connecting the two stages and the many producers spanning both play productions and communication material. The challenge was to develop an expression which could be recognized immediately as belonging to either K1 or K2, and simultaneously invent a design system that would make space for the many yearly plays and their individual characteristics.

In the final design, e-Types have tried to retain the energy of the underground theatre with the punk attitude which characterized the original Kaleidoskop company - while at the same time creating a more popular and differentiated expression with elements from e.g. Pop Art. As Kaleidoskop's most important PR tool are posters, a special paper quality and strong colours have helped make the posters stand out from other posters in the cityscape.
