A Newspaper for the 21st Century
DAGEN, a new daily broadsheet, reinvented the conception of the daily newspaper. Being the 21st century's first new daily on the Danish market it is targeted
specifically to a well-defined group of internationally oriented, open-minded readers with more education than most and an optimistic approach to life.
DAGEN's design is a tribute to the newspaper as a medium. Working with 34 custom-made typefaces inspired by traditional wood-carved types and Mies van der Rohe's modernistic architectural style,
DAGEN's design is old in the sense of letting the text and typefaces carry the weight in the newspaper's expression of identity. At the same time the design is thoroughly contemporary in the sense
of letting in the esthetic approach of lifestyle magazines. Not only in its imagery, but integrated in the choice of topics and angles as well thereby creating a sort of newspaper that has not been
seen before. But a newspaper indeed.
Alas, the finances did not match the ambitions. DAGEN went bust after just a little over 40 issues. A long list of employees, suppliers and consultants never got paid in full. That goes for e-Types as well. But the project still ranks as one of our proudest accomplishments and was awarded two Danish Design Awards in the same year as well as a 'distinctive merit' from the Art Directors Club New York AND a 'Certificate of Excellence' from the Type directors Club New York for the 34 fonts created for the newspaper.
